Rosemary Suckow, Principal Melissa Huey-Burns

The Archdiocese of Washington honors outstanding Catholic faculty members at the High School Principals’ Association Professional Development Conference for Catholic high school educators in October. Their peers nominate the teachers based on criteria for two categories: Novice Teacher of the Year and Veteran Teacher of the Year. The awards were established to recognize the devotion of Catholic secondary school teaching. The Academy’s selections this year are Casey Robertson for Novice Teacher of the Year and Rosemary Suckow for Veteran Teacher of the Year.

Rosemary Suckow joined the Science Department in 2009. Ms. Suckow teaches college prep, Honors and IB Chemistry to an energetic group of students who admire and respect her style of interaction. She is especially creative in making challenging content understood by all. A teacher for over 40 years, Ms. Suckow often reminds her students that when she is in the classroom, “it is the best part of my day.” Ms. Suckow’s dedication to our school mission is evident in her commitment to her students. As an advisor and mentor, she challenges students to rise to their potential. The Academy is proud to have such a great mind and kind soul in our Science Department.

Casey Robertson joined the Holy Cross faculty as a Biology Teacher in 2014. Mrs. Robertson currently teaches AP Biology, Honors Biology, and IB Environmental Systems and Societies SL. Mrs. Robertson works extensively to “encourage student interest in science by developing lesson plans that emphasize exploration through interactive hands-on activities and use of classroom technology.” She also serves as a moderator for the Environmental Club, the Philosophy Club, and the new faculty/staff mentoring program. Additionally, she accompanies students on the three-day trip to the Chesapeake Bay where they conduct experiments, analyze data, and create their own internal assessments. A talented and committed teacher, Mrs. Robertson is not only an asset to the Science Department, but also to the wider Holy Cross community.

Awards will be presented on Friday, October 28, after Mass at the annual HSPA Professional Conference held at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C.  Veteran awardees will receive a monetary award and a plaque.  New teacher awardees will receive a plaque.

The funds raised are being donated to the Holy Cross Mission Center, which is coordinated by the Congregation of Holy Cross priests and brothers. The Mission Center supports efforts in Chile, East Africa, Perú, and regions of Mexico. It also coordinates special mission initiatives, such as relief efforts following the hurricane in Haiti.

Taylor McCarley ’13 and Pandora Wilson ’12 have been named to the America East Women’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team. Both are members of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) basketball team. Taylor is a senior guard and Pandora is a senior forward.

"Taylor and Pandora are very deserving of this honor. They've worked very hard the last few years to reach their highest potential and they've both done that," UMBC head coach Phil Stern said on the school website. "But, the most important thing to them right now is the team and not the individual awards."

Read full details on the UMBC website here.

Six players were chosen for the team. Only UMBC and The Academy of the Holy Cross had two players selected for the honor!

The Holy Cross Performing Arts Department will present their fall production this weekend of You Can’t Take It With You (by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman) by special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc., New York. The play celebrates the Sycamore family, whose members gleefully spend their days practicing ballet, playing xylophone, operating a printing press, writing novels, making homemade fireworks, or whatever else they please. But when daughter Alice invites her new boyfriend Tony and his serious parents to dinner one evening, the differences between the two families come to the forefront, and hilarity ensues. You Can’t It With You is a wacky but poignant reminder to love family unconditionally, to have fun whenever you can, and to live every day to the fullest.

The members of the cast created a video trailer that was shown during the all-school assembly on Monday, October 24.

Watch the video trailer here.

Performances are: Friday, October 28 at 7:00 pm, Saturday, October 29 at 2:00 pm, and Sunday, October 30 at 2:00 pm.

Tickets to You Can’t Take It With You are on sale online here now. The box office opens one hour before curtain for walk-in ticket purchases.

Soccer Team Walks for Breast Cancer

Members of the Varsity Soccer team participated in the "Making Strides against Breast Cancer" 5K walk on Sunday, October 16. Several parents/guardians participated as well. The project was organized by team co-captain Caroline Case ’17. The team sported pink breast cancer awareness shirts that they also wore in school and during warm-ups before their WCAC quarterfinal game on Tuesday, November 1. The cause is important to the team members because of their personal connections with family and friends battling breast cancer.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting communities with a shared determination to help free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer. Participants raise critical funds that enable the American Cancer Society to fund innovative research; provide free, information and support to anyone touched by breast cancer; and help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. The Holy Cross soccer team raised $530 for the cause.
