For Holy Cross faculty and staff, summer was an opportunity to travel, expand horizons, and enhance professional skills.
Liz Creamer’s summer experience was inspirational and faith filled. Liz, her mother and her sister commemorated the first anniversary of her father's death by walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. She says, “As a history teacher it was also worthwhile–we stayed in a hotel built by Ferdinand and Isabella that was renovated by Franco and visited the Prato in Madrid. The food was amazing and we met people from all over the world!!”

Casey Robertson attended IB training in New Mexico in preparation for the IB Environmental Systems and Societies course she teaches. She says, “It was a wonderful experience to get to see a different biome. I got to meet people from all over the world teaching the same content. It was amazing.”
Mike Mastrantuano traveled to France and Belgium where he attended the Euro 2016 soccer tournament and toured Paris, Verdun, and Bastogne. He spent time exploring World War I and II memorials and battle sites including the actual trenches and foxholes of battles that took place. Mike also visited the many historical and beautiful sites of Paris.

Shea Kinser completed the Cambridge English CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) program that is operated by Cambridge University. The seminar involved a month of coursework, assessing lesson planning, and teaching English language learners in Washington, DC.
Iryna Sirota-Basso presented at the Escape Velocity Science Fiction Convention organized by the Museum of Science Fiction. Iryna spoke about the senior-level English course at Holy Cross “Fantastic Realities,” which focuses on science fiction among other genres of literature. Iryna says, “I enjoyed working on it and speaking about our school, and it was interesting to connect with other educators in the area.”

For the past nine years Rusty McCrady has worked for the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. This summer he supervised two graduate students interning in Rockville and Washington, DC. He says that he enjoys every minute of this experience. “I meet great people, and I am learning as much as they are about how education, technology and society in general are evolving.”
Julie Ritter attended the American School Counselor annual conference in New Orleans–a high level, in-depth program for school counselors. Julie says, “It was a wonderful way to enhance my school counseling knowledge, improve the school counseling program and network with other school counselors to discover best practices in the field, all while enjoying the sights and sounds of Bourbon Street...not to mention the shrimp and grits and beignets!”

Margaret Mackinnon participated in a week-long poetry seminar at The Frost Place in Franconia, NH, a nonprofit educational center for poetry and the arts based at Robert Frost’s old homestead. In addition to attending workshops and presentations, Margaret read some of her work in a building that was once the barn at Robert Frost's farm.
