Seniors and Moms/Guardians Celebrate Senior Tea Tradition
On Sunday, December 4, Class of 2017 Seniors and their mothers/guardians enjoyed a longstanding Holy Cross tradition – Senior Tea. The annual event is planned and hosted by the Class of 2019 Sophomore Class who are the “Little Sisters” of the Seniors.
The auditorium, where the tea took place, was decorated with beautiful poinsettias and wreaths purchased as a fundraiser organized by the Home and School Association. The decorations provided a lovely backdrop for the many photos taken. During the event, students were welcomed by Principal Melissa Huey-Burns. Faculty member Casey Robertson shared about the Senior Tea tradition at Holy Cross and Assistant Principal of Academics Rodney Larsen gave a lesson on the history and proper etiquette of the formal High Tea. All enjoyed each other’s good company.
The Senior Tea is a tradition dating back to the 1990s but has roots in teas and gatherings from the days at our Upton Street campus. See other Holy Cross traditions here.
Holy Cross Prepares the Way During Advent
To kick off the Advent Season, the Campus Ministry office with the student Peer Ministers organized a New Year’s celebration for the beginning of the new Church year. Students enjoyed a fun assembly of music, dancing and singing “Advent Carols.” Each student was asked to make an Advent New Year’s Resolution and write it on an ornament that has hung on a tree in the Student Commons throughout the season as a reminder of their promises.
To keep the spirit alive throughout Advent, Campus Ministry sponsored a fun “InstaAdvent” contest in which the community submitted photos on Instagram and Facebook via #AHCAdvent. Categories included ugly Christmas sweaters, family traditions, favorite Christmas movie, Starbucks Holiday cup, and comfort food.

Saint Andre Feast Day and Epiphany Prayer Service
On Friday, January 6, Holy Cross celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Andre Bessette and the Feast of Epiphany with a special prayer service. The student Peer Ministry class led the service and the Madrigal Singer ensemble led several songs dedicated to Saint Andre. At the conclusion of the service, the balloons from the Advent Prayer Service in December were released in honor of Epiphany.
Saint Andre was canonized in 2010 and is the first saint from the Congregation of Holy Cross. During his life, Brother Andre was the doorkeeper of Notre Dame College in Montreal. He was known to intercede to Saint Joseph for many people who were sick. Many people credited their healing to his intercession prayers. Brother Andre was also instrumental in the building of Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal. He died in Montreal on January 6, 1937. It is estimated that more than a million people made the pilgrimage to the Oratory to say their good-byes to their beloved Brother André. He was beatified on May 23, 1982, and canonized in October 2010, becoming the Congregation of Holy Cross’ first saint.
